How to export from Splitwise
Export a group or friendship from Splitwise, then import the file into a nest. Eider matches the people, keeps older expenses in their own period and checks every balance against Splitwise.
Splitwise can export any group or friendship as a spreadsheet file, and Eider can import that file into a nest. Importing is free.
How do I export a group from Splitwise?
On the Splitwise website, open the group or friendship from the left sidebar, click the gear icon at the top right, then click Export Spreadsheet.
In the Splitwise app, open the group or friendship, scroll the menu in its header all the way to the right, and tap Export at the end.
Splitwise exports one group or friendship at a time. Export each one you want to bring in, and import each file into the nest it belongs in.
How do I import the file into Eider?
In the nest you want the expenses in, open the nest menu from the ring at the top left of the home screen and choose Import expenses. Use the Choose button at the bottom of the screen to pick the file you exported. Eider reads it and shows Coming from Splitwise?, with how many expenses, payments and people the file holds.
If the file is in another currency than the nest, Eider asks first. Choose Create new nest to start a nest in the file's currency. Or choose the button that names the nest's currency, for example Convert to dollars, to bring the file in here with each expense and payment converted at the rate on its date.
Choose Next to go on to Who's who, where you match the people, then Next again for How it lands, which shows where everything goes. Choose Import to bring the file in. Eider opens Activity, where a row named Splitwise import shows the dates the file covers. Still importing your Splitwise history shows at the top of the screen until every expense and payment is in.
If the file doesn't add up, nothing comes in. That usually happens when the file was opened and saved in a spreadsheet app, so export a fresh copy from Splitwise and try again.
How are the people in the file matched?
Who's who lists each person in the file with the person in your nest they're matched to. Similar names are already matched, so check each one. To change a match, choose the person and pick someone else in the nest, or Someone new.
Someone with no match comes in as someone new. Eider adds them to the nest with an invite link, and their shares count before they join.
Where do older expenses go?
Expenses and payments dated on or after the day your current period started join that period. Everything older becomes one period of its own, before your current one, and never joins a period already in the nest. If nothing is open in the nest, the whole file becomes one period.
If some rows have the same day and amount as an expense or payment already in the nest, How it lands lists them under a setting that names how many, for example Leave these 3 out. It starts on, so they don't come in twice. Turn it off to bring them in anyway.
Under Checks, How it lands shows that the balances match Splitwise to the cent for every person. An expense with more than one payer comes in as one expense per payer. Receipts, notes and comments stay in Splitwise.
Can I import the same group again?
Yes. Export the group again and import the new file into the same nest. Only the expenses and payments no earlier import brought into the nest come in, and Eider shows how many, for example 9 new since October 23. An expense changed in Splitwise since then counts as new.
People are matched the way they were last time. If someone can't be, such as a person new to the group, Who's who opens so you can match them.
If nothing in the file is new, Eider says Nothing new since your last import, with a link to that import.
How do I undo an import?
Choose the Splitwise import row in Activity, then choose Undo import at the bottom of the screen it opens. Every expense and payment the import added comes off the nest, for everyone in it. The people it added stay in the nest.
Undo import shows only to the person who ran the import, once it has finished, and only until someone records a new payment in the nest.
