Signing up and signing in

Create an account with your email, Google or Apple, then sign in with a password, an emailed code or a passkey, with two-factor if you turn it on. On the web you can try Eider without an account first and keep that nest when you sign up or sign in.

One Eider account works on the web, iPhone and Android. The ways to sign in are the same on all three, except that the Android app has no Continue with Apple. Trying Eider without an account works on the web only.

How do I create an account?

Choose Get started on eider.app, or install the Eider app on iPhone or Android, which opens on the sign-up screen. Enter your first name, last name, email and a password of at least 8 characters, then choose Create account. Eider emails you a 6-digit code. Enter it on the Verify your email screen to finish.

You can also choose Continue with Google, or Continue with Apple on the web and iPhone. On the sign-in screen, Continue with Google, Continue with Apple and Use email code create an account too, if your email does not have one yet.

If you leave before entering the code, sign in later with your email and password, and Eider emails you a new one.

Once you are in, Eider asks you to make your first nest. Choose Create nest. The button also names the currency the nest keeps its expenses in, as in Create nest (USD). If someone has already invited you, their invite shows first, and Accept joins their nest instead. On iPhone and Android, Eider then asks whether to send you notifications. Last, add your first expense, or choose Skip and add one later.

How do I sign in?

Enter your email and password and choose Sign in. You can also choose Continue with Google, or Continue with Apple on the web and iPhone.

To sign in without a password, choose Use email code, enter your email and choose Send code. Eider emails you a 6-digit code that works for 5 minutes. If it expires, choose Use a different email to go back, and send a new one.

If you forgot your password, choose Forgot password? and Eider emails you a code to set a new one.

An account with two-factor turned on cannot sign in with an emailed code. Sign in with your password instead.

How do I sign in with a passkey?

Save a passkey on your device, then sign in with it. To save one, open Sign-in & security in your account menu, choose Passkeys, then Add a passkey. This works on the web, iPhone and Android.

The sign-in screen can save one too. On a device that can save a passkey, it shows a switch labeled Let this device sign you in, and the switch starts on. Sign in with it on, and Eider saves a passkey on that device once you are in. On a phone the switch can read Use Face ID to sign in or Use your fingerprint to sign in instead. Once that device has saved a passkey, or you have declined one there, the switch stops showing.

On the web, pick your passkey from the email field's suggestions on the sign-in screen, where your browser offers them. If the last account signed in on that browser has a passkey, the screen also shows Sign in with this device.

On iPhone and Android, if the last account signed in on the phone has a passkey, opening Eider while signed out brings up the passkey prompt by itself. If you close it, choose Sign in with Face ID, Sign in with your fingerprint or Sign in with this device, whichever your phone shows.

Signing in with a passkey does not ask for a two-factor code.

What if my account has two-factor turned on?

Sign in with your email and password, then enter the six-digit code from your authenticator app. Every password sign-in asks for the code, on every device. If you cannot reach the app, choose Use a backup code instead and enter one of the backup codes you saved when you turned two-factor on. Each one works once.

Signing in with a passkey, Google or Apple does not ask for the code. An emailed code is refused for an account with two-factor, and Eider asks for your password instead.

To turn two-factor on or off, open Sign-in & security in your account menu and choose Two-factor authentication. The code sits behind your password, so an account that signs in only with Google or Apple makes a password first, and Eider walks you through it.

Can I try Eider without an account?

Yes, on the web. On the eider.app home page, enter an amount in the Split an expense card, then choose the Split button. Eider opens a nest called Your nest with no account behind it, and you can keep adding expenses and name the people you split with.

That nest is saved on that browser only. It has no email or password, so another browser or device cannot open it, and if the browser's data is cleared, the nest is gone. Without an account you have one nest, and you cannot create or join another. The iPhone and Android apps need an account.

How do I keep the nest I started without an account?

Sign up or sign in on the same browser, any way you like, and the nest moves into your account.

To make a new account, choose Save split at the top of the page, then Continue with Google, Continue with Apple, or Use email instead, which asks your first name and emails you a 6-digit code. The new account starts with that nest as its only nest.

If you already have an account, choose Sign in at the top of the page, in the menu under the Eider logo, or under Already have an account? on the Keep your nest screen that Save split opens. The nest is added beside the nests you already have, and it opens.

A nest still called Your nest is renamed after your first name, for example Sam's nest. If you added someone's email before you had an account, Eider emails them their invite once you sign in.
