Members and invites
Add people by name from the nest menu and split expenses with them before they join. Eider keeps a separate balance between every two members.
A nest is the people you share expenses with. Any member can add people by name, and you can split expenses with someone before they join. All of it works on the web, iPhone and Android.
How do I invite someone to my nest?
Open the nest menu from the ring at the top left of the home screen, choose Members & invites, then choose Add people. Enter the person's name, add their email if you want Eider to send the invite, and choose Invite. Choose Add another to add several people at once.
Everyone you add by name gets a personal invite link, and whoever opens it joins the nest as that person. If you entered an email, Eider emails them the link from you. To send it yourself, choose the share button beside them in Members & invites. On the web it shows the link with a copy button, and on iPhone and Android it opens your phone's share options. A link works once, and stops working 30 days after you add the person. To email it again, choose the person, then Resend invite.
Any member can add people by name and change the nest's settings. The Owner badge in Members & invites marks whoever created the nest, or the member it passed to when they left.
If you're trying Eider on the web without an account, Eider sends the email once you sign up or sign in, and asks you to sign up before you share a link.
What happens when someone accepts?
They need an Eider account to join. Joining adds the nest beside any nests they're already in, and they switch between nests from the ring at the top left of the home screen.
A personal link opens in a web browser, on a phone too, and shows You're joining as with their name. They choose Join, or Sign up to join if they aren't signed in, which brings them back to the link once they have an account. If the link isn't meant for them, they can choose Start my own nest instead. The Accept invitation button in an invite email opens the same link.
Someone who signs up with the email address you invited, on the web or in the app, sees your invite as soon as they're signed up and chooses Accept. Someone already signed in with that address finds it in the account menu, the avatar at the top right of the home screen, under You've been invited, and chooses Accept there.
Once they join, Eider sends a notification that they joined. It goes to the person who added them when they choose Accept in Eider, and to the nest's Owner when they choose Join on a personal link. The new member sees a banner with the nest's split.
Can I split with someone who hasn't joined yet?
Yes. Add them by name, with or without an email, and they're in the nest right away: new expenses are split with them, and you can choose them as the person who paid. When they join, everything split with them becomes theirs. A personal link asks them first whether they're that person. In Eider's records, someone who hasn't joined yet is a placeholder member.
To email them an invite later, choose them in Members & invites, enter their Email and choose Send invite. Once the invite is sent, the address can't be changed.
A nest with only you in it splits against Your other member until you add someone. The first person you add by name takes that place, along with its share of what you've added so far.
Do earlier expenses change when someone joins?
Not for someone you add by name. Each expense keeps the split it was added with. A person you add by name is part of the expenses added after you add them, and those shares become theirs when they join. Expenses from before you added them stay as they were.
The one exception is a nest that had only you in it. The first person you add by name takes over Your other member's share of every expense you added before.
If your nest splits by percentage and the people you just added have no share yet, Eider opens Standing split after you add them so you can give them one. Until everyone in the nest has a share, new expenses are split evenly.
How do balances work with three or more people?
Eider keeps a separate balance between you and each other member, so what you owe one person never changes what you owe another. On home, choose Details on your balance to see every member, then choose one to see just the two of you: the expenses you share and how to settle. A payment is always between two people.
The nest's split rule, under Standing split in the nest menu, is either even, so everyone takes the same share, or a percentage for each member that adds up to 100%.
How do I leave a nest, or remove someone?
Settle up with everyone in the nest before you leave. Open the nest menu from the ring at the top left of the home screen and choose Nest settings. Choose Leave nest, type LEAVE, and choose Leave. You lose access to the nest. Your past expenses and shares stay in its record, and nobody can change the split of an expense you added once you've left. If you had the Owner badge, it passes to the member who joined earliest. If nobody else has joined the nest, Nest settings shows Delete nest instead.
To remove someone who hasn't joined yet, choose them in Members & invites, then Remove from nest, and confirm with Remove. Any member can do this. Their personal link stops working, and their shares of past expenses stay. Eider has no control for removing a member who has joined. Only they can leave.
Does adding members cost anything?
No. Adding people and joining a nest are free, and nobody needs Plus to be in a nest or to share its expenses. Plus is a membership one person holds, not a setting of the nest, so people in the same nest can be on different plans.
