Nest settings

A nest's settings are in the nest menu, which opens from the ring at the top left of the home screen. Any member can change them, and each change applies to the whole nest.

A nest's settings belong to the nest, not to one person. They live in the nest menu, which has the same rows on the web, iPhone and Android.

Where are my nest's settings?

In the nest menu. Choose the ring at the top left of the home screen to open it, then choose Nest settings. Screen readers call the ring Switch nest. Nest settings opens a screen headed Nest details. The nest's split rule has its own row in the same menu, Standing split.

On the web, the nest menu opens over the page. On iPhone and Android, it slides in from the left as a screen of its own.

What's in the nest menu?

Everything about the nest you have open, in three parts: Activity, Organize and Nest. At the top are the nest's name, its type and how many members have joined, or Just you when nobody else has. A nest whose type is Other leaves the type out. Below them:

  • Activity: Expenses, every expense added to the nest, and Periods, each period and its balance.
  • Organize: Repeating expenses, the expenses that repeat on a schedule. Merchants, the stores and services named on the nest's expenses, which you can add and edit. Receipts, the receipts scanned in the nest, kept together and searchable. Payment sources, the cards and accounts you pay with in this nest, which only you can see.
  • Nest: Standing split, the split rule new expenses follow. Members & invites, the people in the nest and how to add more. Nest settings, the nest's own settings.

Receipts needs your own Plus membership. Without one, it opens a screen about Plus instead of the receipts.

A few rows show a figure: Expenses counts the expenses in the current period, Periods says where your balance stands when it isn't zero, and Members & invites counts the members who have joined.

What can I change in Nest settings?

The nest's name, its type, its currency settings and whether repeating expenses can open new periods, in that order, with Danger zone at the bottom. There is no Save button. Each setting saves when you change it.

  • Nest name: the name everyone in the nest sees, and so does anyone you invite. It saves a moment after you stop typing, or when you leave the field, and shows Saved. It can be up to 60 characters.
  • Nest type: Household, Trip, Event or Other. It sets the nest's icon and how Eider talks about the nest. In a Trip or Event nest, the split opens right after you add an expense, so you can choose who shares it. Turning off Set the split after adding, in Preferences, stops that for everything except a repeating expense, which always opens its split. Adding expenses explains when else the split opens.
  • Currency settings: Base currency is the currency the nest keeps its expenses and balance in. Any member can change it until something fixes it, such as the first payment. If the nest has expenses, Eider asks you to confirm a switch first. Once the currency is fixed, the row can't be changed and its caption says what fixed it. Currency covers when it can change and what a switch does.
  • Expenses in other currencies, also under Currency settings, lets members add an expense in another currency, which Eider converts into the base currency when it is added. It starts off. Adding expenses shows how to use it.
  • Periods: Allow repeating expenses to open new periods adds a Once per period switch to each repeating expense on a monthly or longer schedule. Turning it on in a nest of three or more people, counting people added by name, asks you to confirm first. Repeating expenses explains when it helps.
  • Danger zone: Leave nest, or Delete nest when nobody else has joined the nest.

Who can change a nest's settings?

Any member of the nest can change any of its settings, and each change applies to everyone in it. None of them is limited to the nest's Owner.

When someone switches the base currency, the other members see the new currency right away. Each of them also gets a notification in the app, but no push, saying who changed it and what it changed from and to. Anyone can turn those off in the account menu, under Notifications, with Currency changes.

Eider sends no notification when someone renames the nest, changes its type or turns a setting on or off. The other members see the change the next time they open Eider or come back to it.

How do I switch to another nest, or start a new one?

Open the nest menu and choose Show more nests, just under the nest's name. Your other nests appear, with Add a nest at the bottom. Choose one of your nests to switch to it. Home and the nest menu then show that nest, and Eider remembers your choice, so it's the nest you see the next time you sign in. Choose Hide more nests to close the list.

To start a new nest, choose Add a nest. If you're in only one nest, there is no Show more nests, and Add a nest sits in its place. Pick what kind of nest it is, name it and choose its currency, then choose Create nest. The type and currency start filled in, and a nest you leave unnamed is named after you, such as Sam's Nest, so you can create it right away. You can change the name and type later in Nest settings, and the currency until it's fixed.

A new nest starts with just you, and Eider switches you into it. You can add expenses straight away and invite people whenever you're ready. Until you add someone, its expenses split with a stand-in called Your other member.

How is the nest menu different from the account menu?

The nest menu is for the nest you have open, and its settings are shared by everyone in that nest. The account menu is for you, in every nest you're in. Open it from your avatar at the top right of the home screen, which screen readers call Account.

The account menu has Profile, Sign-in & security, Notifications and Preferences, a card with your plan, About Eider and Sign out, with FAQ, Privacy policy and Terms of service at the bottom. When someone has invited you to a nest, it also shows You've been invited. Nobody else in your nests can change these settings, and Notifications and Preferences apply in every nest you're in.

How do I leave or delete a nest?

Open Nest settings and go to Danger zone, at the bottom of the screen. It offers Leave nest while anyone else has joined the nest, and Delete nest when nobody else has. People you added by name who haven't joined yet don't count.

To leave, first settle up with everyone in the nest. Then choose Leave nest, type LEAVE, and choose Leave. You lose access to the nest, and the expenses you added stay with it for the others. If you had the Owner badge, it passes to the member who joined earliest.

To delete, choose Delete nest, type the nest's name, and choose Delete. Deleting archives the nest and every expense in it, and it can't be undone from the app.

Members and invites covers what happens to your shares when you leave, and how to remove someone who hasn't joined yet.
