Your account
Your account menu opens from your avatar at the top right of the home screen. It holds your profile, sign-in and security, notifications and preferences, support and your data, and signing out or deleting your account.
The account menu holds the settings that belong to you rather than to a nest: your profile, how you sign in, your notifications and preferences, and signing out or deleting your account. It has the same rows on the web, iPhone and Android, and nobody else in your nests can change any of it.
Where is my account menu?
Choose your avatar at the top right of the home screen. Screen readers call it Account.
On the web, the avatar is at the top right of every page in the app, and the account menu opens as a panel over the page. Choose the X at the panel's top right to close it. On iPhone and Android, the avatar is on the home screen, and the account menu opens as a screen of its own that slides in from the right. Choose the button at its top left to go back. Screen readers call both Close.
On the web without an account, there is no account menu. The top of the page shows Sign in and Save split in its place. Signing up and signing in covers trying Eider without an account and keeping what you started.
What's in the account menu?
At the top are your email, your avatar and a greeting with your first name. Choosing the avatar there opens Profile. Below them, in order:
- You've been invited, only when someone has invited you to another nest. It opens your invitations, where you can accept one.
- Profile, Sign-in & security, Notifications and Preferences.
- A card with your plan.
- About Eider, with the version you're using beside it.
- Sign out.
- FAQ, Privacy policy and Terms of service, at the bottom.
Notifications and Preferences apply in every nest you're in. Nest settings explains how the account menu differs from the nest menu, which holds the settings a nest shares.
How do I change my name, email or photo?
Open the account menu and choose Profile, or choose your avatar at the top of the menu. The screen is headed Personal information and has three fields:
- Full name: your first and last name, in one field. It can't be left empty.
- Email: the address you sign in with. Changing it doesn't change your email straight away. Eider first emails your current address a link to approve the change.
- Payment handle: your Venmo username. When someone in your nest settles up with you through Venmo, Venmo opens on your handle. Only members of your nests see it.
Choose Save changes when you're done.
To change your photo, choose Upload photo. On the web, pick a JPG, PNG or WebP image of up to 4 MB. On iPhone and Android, choose Take photo or Choose from library. Remove photo shows once you've uploaded a photo. It doesn't show for a photo that came from your Google account.
Where do I manage passkeys, two-factor and my password?
In Sign-in & security, in the account menu. Its first part, Sign-in & passkeys, has four rows:
- Passkeys: None, or how many devices have one. Choose it to add a passkey or remove one.
- Two-factor authentication: Off or On. Choose it to turn two-factor on or off.
- Change password. If your account has no password, because you sign in with Google, Apple or an emailed code, this row reads Add a password instead.
- Sign out everywhere: signs you out on every other device and keeps you signed in on this one. It doesn't ask you to confirm.
Below them, Linked accounts lists Apple or Google beside your email when you sign in with one. It only shows the link, and you can't add or remove one there. Account, at the bottom, holds Account management, where you can delete your account.
Signing up and signing in covers each way to sign in, including passkeys and two-factor, in full.
How do I choose which notifications I get?
Open the account menu and choose Notifications. Every switch starts on, and your choices apply in every nest you're in.
- Activity: one switch for each kind of notification, such as New expenses, Settle-ups, Invite accepted and Currency changes. Turning one off stops that notification everywhere: in the app, as a push and by email.
- Email me about: Someone joins your nest, Your split rule changes and An amount is needed, the three that also arrive by email. Turning one off here stops the email and keeps the notification in the app.
- Monthly recap: your month in review, emailed on the 1st. The unsubscribe link in that email turns the same switch off.
On iPhone and Android, the Notifications row in the account menu reads On, or Turn on when push notifications are off for Eider on that phone. While push is off, the Notifications screen opens with a card that says Push is turned off. Its button reads Enable, which asks the phone to allow notifications again, or Settings, which opens the phone's own settings when Eider can't ask again. The web shows neither, because Eider sends no push notifications to a browser.
How do I change the appearance or the split step?
Open the account menu and choose Preferences. It holds two settings.
- Set the split after adding, under Adding expenses. With it on, the split opens right after you add a one-time expense, so you can choose who shares it. Until you change it, the split opens this way once three or more people have joined the nest, or when the nest's type is Trip or Event. Your choice covers every nest you're in. A repeating expense always opens its split, whatever this is set to.
- Appearance, under Display: System, Light or Dark. System follows your device. Appearance is saved on each device, so your phone and your computer can differ.
Preferences has no language or currency setting. Each nest keeps its own currency, which Currency explains.
How do I contact support or download my data?
Open the account menu and choose About Eider. Its row in the menu shows the version you're using.
- Contact support, under For support, starts an email to support@eider.app in your mail app, with the app version, your device, its operating system and your Diagnostic ID already in it. You can edit or remove them before you send it.
- Download my data, under Your data, opens a page listing what the copy includes: your profile, your nest memberships, your expenses and settle-ups with their splits, and the invitations you sent and received. Choose Email my data, and Eider emails you a link to a JSON archive when it's ready. The link works for 7 days, and you can ask once every 24 hours.
- What's new, at the top, links to the latest release notes, the release history and the roadmap.
How do I sign out?
Open the account menu and choose Sign out, near the bottom. Eider signs you out on that device straight away, without asking you to confirm, and shows the sign-in screen.
To sign out on your other devices as well, open Sign-in & security and choose Sign out everywhere. It ends your sessions on every other device and keeps this one signed in.
How do I delete my account?
Open the account menu from your avatar at the top right of the home screen, choose Sign-in & security, then Account management, then Delete account. Type "DELETE my account" exactly as shown, then choose Delete. The Delete button stays off until the phrase matches.
You're signed out on every device right away. Any copy of your data you asked for is deleted at once, and so is any receipt you scanned but hadn't added to an expense. Your account then waits 7 days, and signing back in during those 7 days restores it. After 7 days you can't sign in to it again, and Eider:
- Takes you out of every nest you're in. If you had the Owner badge in a nest, it passes to the member who joined earliest.
- Removes any nest you're the only member of, with the expenses in it. People you added by name who haven't joined don't count as members.
- Clears your name, email, photo and payment handle from your account, removes your password and any Google or Apple sign-in, and cancels the invitations you sent.
In a nest you shared, the expenses and settle-ups you added stay, with their splits, so the people still in it keep an accurate record. They no longer carry your name.
If you can't open Eider, email support@eider.app from the email address on your account and ask for it to be deleted.
