Your charges

Your charges is the list of charges from your connected banks and cards, and only you can see it. From there you add a charge to a nest, or link it to an expense the nest already has.

Bank sync and Eider Plus are coming this fall. Neither is available yet.

What does "pending" mean, and why did a pending charge's amount change?

A pending charge is one your bank has authorized but not posted yet, and its amount can change until it posts.

Pending charges are listed together at the top of Your charges, under Pending, with how many there are and, when they are all in one currency, their total. Tap Pending to hide them or show them again. Under them, Eider notes that pending amounts can change until the charge is posted, usually a day or two.

The amount changes when the bank's final figure is different from the one it first authorized. A tip added after you paid at a restaurant and a hold at a gas pump are common examples. When the charge posts, your bank sends it again as a posted charge. That one is listed under its month like any other posted charge, and the pending one comes off the list.

A pending charge can't be added to a nest, because its amount isn't final. It has no + button, and opening it shows when it was authorized, with nothing to add. Once it posts, you can add it.

If Eider had already linked a pending charge to an expense, the link moves to the posted charge, and if the posted amount is different, the expense usually takes it.

How do I add a charge to a nest? How do I split it?

Tap the + on the charge in Your charges, then pick the nest.

Your charges opens from the card icon beside the notifications bell at the top of your home screen, and charges arrive there once you connect a bank or card. If you are in one nest, the + adds the charge to it. If you are in more than one, a list headed Add to opens, and you tap the nest. Each nest in the list shows its kind and its split, for example Household · even, 2 ways. Once 8 of a merchant's charges have gone to one nest, added or linked, and more than to any other nest, that nest is checked for you in the list.

You can also open the charge and tap the button at the bottom, which starts with Split into.

The charge becomes an expense in that nest, paid by you, with the charge's amount, merchant and date, and a category matched to the one your bank sent, if there is a match. It is split the same way as an expense you type in by hand. The charge keeps its place in Your charges, now with a check and the nest's name.

In a trip or an event, or a nest with three or more members, the split editor usually opens next, so you can set this expense's split. Everywhere else, Eider tells you the charge was added. To choose for yourself, tap your avatar, then Preferences, and turn Set the split after adding on or off. You can change any one expense's split later by opening the expense.

Some charges have no + button. A pending charge can be added once it posts. A refund or other credit can't be added to a nest. A charge on an account you share with someone can't be added once they have added it to one of your nests.

Why does a charge say "Linked automatically"?

Eider found an expense already in your nest that is the same purchase as the charge, and linked the two so the purchase isn't in the nest twice.

It does this as charges arrive from your bank, checking each one against the expenses in your nests. It links a charge on its own only when all of these are true:

  • The expense is filed under the same card, or under your payment source in that nest that the card is linked to by its last 4 digits.
  • The amounts are the same, a scanned receipt's subtotal, tax, any fees and its tip add up to the charge, or the two are within 1 percent or 25 cents, whichever is more and the merchant matches.
  • The expense is dated no more than 3 days before the charge, or 1 day after it.
  • The merchant is the same, or one of the two has no merchant.
  • The expense is in the charge's currency, or was converted from that currency.
  • The expense isn't already linked to another charge.

When it isn't that sure, it leaves the charge for you to add, and it can ask about the expense when you do.

In Your charges, a charge linked this way has a check with a small sparkle, and its details say Linked automatically. No second expense is added.

If the expense's amount was different, it takes the bank's amount, and the other members see that as an edit. The charge then shows the expense's old amount under its own, for example was $63.84, and its details say the nest was updated to match. The expense keeps its own amount instead when its period is already settled, when the person who added it has left the nest, or when it was converted from another currency. Then the charge shows the expense's amount as, for example, nest has $63.84, and its details say the nest was left unchanged.

A charge that says Linked, without automatically, was linked while you were adding the charge or adding the expense, either because you tapped Link or because Eider was sure enough to link it for you.

Link ties the charge to the expense the nest already has, so the purchase isn't added twice. Cancel adds nothing.

When you add a charge, Eider looks through that nest's recent expenses for one that is the same purchase. If it finds one it can link to but isn't sure, it asks "Already an expense?" and shows the expense it found:

Link
The charge is linked to that expense, and no second expense is added. If the amounts are a little different, the expense usually takes the bank's amount. Eider tells you once it is linked.
Cancel
Nothing is added and nothing is linked. If you add the same charge again from the same screen, Eider adds it as a new expense without that question, for when it really is a separate purchase.

When Eider is sure, it links the charge without asking and tells you so. Either way, the charge then says Linked, and Unlink takes the link back.

If the expense it finds is one the charge can't be linked to, for example because it is filed under a different card, Eider asks "Already added this?" instead. Add adds the charge as a new expense anyway, and Cancel adds nothing.

Eider only checks the expenses your phone or computer already has loaded for that nest, so it can miss an older expense, or all of them in a nest you haven't opened. There is no way to pick an expense yourself and link a charge to it.

Add saves your expense on its own. Link saves it linked to that charge from your bank, so the charge won't become a second expense later.

When you add an expense by hand, or save one from a scanned receipt, Eider checks it against your own bank charges that aren't in a nest yet. If one looks like the same purchase but Eider isn't sure, it asks whether this is your charge, naming the card, the charge's date and its amount:

Add
The expense is added on its own, and the charge stays in Your charges, not added.
Link
The expense is added and linked to the charge. If the amounts are a little different, the expense usually ends up with the bank's amount.

If you close the question without choosing, on the web or with the back button on Android, nothing is saved and your expense is still there to finish.

When Eider is sure, it adds the expense already linked and tells you so, with an Undo that keeps the expense and takes the link back.

Eider only asks when the expense is filed under the payment source in that nest that the card is linked to, so it won't ask about an expense paid with Cash, for example. If the expense also looks like one already in the nest, Eider asks "Already added this?" first, and doesn't ask about the charge in the same add.

Eider only checks the charges your phone or computer already has loaded from Your charges, so it can miss an older one.

In Your charges, tap the check on the linked charge, then Unlink. You can also open the charge, tap its three dots, and tap Unlink there.

Unlink is on charges that say Linked or Linked automatically. The expense stays in the nest, and the charge goes back to not added, with its + button, so you can add it as an expense of its own.

Eider doesn't keep a record that you unlinked the two. If you leave the charge unadded and your bank sends it again, for example when it changes or when a pending charge posts, Eider can link it to the same expense again. Unlink it again, or add it as an expense of its own.

If linking had moved the expense to the bank's amount, unlinking puts its own amount back. It keeps the bank's amount instead if the period has been settled since, if someone has changed the amount or the split since, if the person who added it has left the nest, or if you have left it. The message after you unlink says which happened.

In Your charges, the message that tells you a charge was linked also has an Undo, which takes the link back the way Unlink does.

A charge you added yourself, rather than linked, has no Unlink. Its expense was made from the charge, so its menu offers Remove expense instead, which takes that expense out of the nest.

I deleted an expense. Why does the charge show as not added again?

Because the expense is gone from the nest, but the charge is still your bank's record of what you paid, so it goes back to waiting to be added.

Deleting the expense takes it out of the nest. The charge stays in Your charges, now without its check and with its + button back. You can add it again, to the same nest or a different one, or leave it.

It works the same way however the expense was deleted: from the nest, from the charge's menu with Remove expense, or by the member who added it, when your charge was linked to their expense. If the delete is undone, the charge reads as added again. An undo is refused if the charge has been added again in the meantime, so the purchase is never in a nest twice.

An expense in a settled period can't be deleted until the period is reopened, so its charge stays added.

How do foreign-currency charges work?

A charge in another currency shows what your card was charged in that currency, and it is converted when you add it to a nest that uses a different one.

If all your nests use the same currency, an approximate figure in it appears under the charge's amount, at today's rate, and the charge's details show it with the rate. It stays an estimate at today's rate even after you add the charge, so it can differ from what the expense holds.

When you add the charge to a nest in a different currency, Eider asks first. The question says what the charge goes in as, at the exchange rate for the day of the charge, or the closest day Eider has a rate for, which is usually the last business day before it. That rate is pinned to the expense, so the split can't move under anybody later. Tap Split it at that rate to add it, or Not now to leave it in Your charges. The expense's details show the original amount and the rate.

If Eider has no exchange rate for the charge's currency, adding it to a nest that uses another currency stops with a message saying so.

A foreign charge can only be linked to an expense in the same currency, or to one converted from that currency. If a converted expense's original amount is different from the charge, Eider leaves the expense as it is, and the charge shows nest has and the expense's original amount.

What happens to a charge in a period that's already settled?

A settled period's expenses don't change, so a charge from that time goes into the period you are in now, and a link never changes an amount in a settled period.

If you add a charge whose date falls in a period the nest has already settled, Eider asks first. It names the nest and the day it settled, and says the charge goes into the period you are in now. Tap the button that names this month, for example Put it in October, to add it there, dated today. Or tap Pick a different nest.

A charge can still be linked to an expense in a settled period. If their amounts differ, the expense keeps its own, and the charge shows nest has and the expense's amount.

Unlink works there too. The charge goes back to not added, and the expense keeps the amount it has.

An expense added from a charge can't be removed while its period is settled. Reopen the period first.

Does bank sync work before anyone else joins my nest?

Yes. Adding, linking and unlinking charges work the same before anyone else joins your nest.

Your bank connection belongs to you, so its charges can go to any nest you are in. A charge you add to a nest nobody else has joined yet is split the same way as an expense you type in by hand, and in the list of nests to add to, that nest's split reads 2 ways. Eider links charges to expenses there, and asks about them, exactly as it does in any other nest.
